DCAD’s mission is to educate talented and dedicated students to become art makers, idea generators, problem solvers, and visual communicators who can redefine the way we perceive and experience the world around us. It also serves as a visible stakeholder, cultural anchor, and catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Wilmington.
In 1996, Pratt Institute and the Corcoran College of Art and Design came together in an innovative partnership that formed the bedrock of Delaware College of Art and Design, in response to an invitation by the Wilmington community to establish Delaware’s only art and design school. Pratt Institute in New York City and the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. are two of America’s oldest and most distinguished visual arts colleges, and, through this partnership, helped create the foundation for the Delaware College of Art and Design.
Now operating as an independent institution, an education at DCAD provides one of the richest opportunities available in American art and design education today.
The mission of the photography program is to provide students the technical skills and aesthetic language necessary to develop personal vision and communication through the process of photography. Students are exposed to traditional and digital photographic processes and learn to apply the technical skills of each form to develop their creative visions by creating a portfolio of photographic work that demonstrates the application of their technical and creative skills to prepare them for further study at a four year institution.
